Hammonton Community Members Take the Stage in New Partnership with Eagle Theatre and Allies in Caring
Eagle Theatre and Allies in Caring’s Con-Vivir Wellness Hub announce a pilot launch partnership, It’s Our Story, that empowers community voices through theatrical storytelling. The program is presented as part of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s 2023 Stages Festival.
Over the course of three workshops, a group of Hammonton community members learn and use the tools of the theater to explore body, voice, and artistic expression to build confidence, friendships, and a deeper sense of self. Participants will step inside the world of theater learning improvisation, games, and basic theater techniques. Throughout the workshops, participants are encouraged to share their own unique stories and perspectives and work collaboratively to create a short performance piece. The program will culminate in a FREE public sharing of the participants’ time and work together at 2pm on Saturday, March 25th at Eagle Theatre. It’s Our Story embraces theater as a community connector – to bridge relationships with our neighbors and to develop and grow empathy in Hammonton.
“We are thrilled to announce this new partnership with our friends at Allies in Caring. Since joining Eagle in 2020, I have been wanting to dive more into community-centered devised work that allows us to connect the theater to the direct needs of the people here in Hammonton. I was joined by a new Managing Director in August who shares this same vision, so we made it a priority to focus on this aspect of how we believe our theater can serve Hammonton and the South Jersey region. The folks at Allies feel the same, so it’s been just a pleasure to see this project come to life,” says Producing Artistic Director, Angela Longo.
It’s Our Story is an extension of Eagle’s long-standing New Works Development Series, which has historically cultivated new plays by up and coming local playwrights. In this new program, the community becomes the playwright of its own story. Workshops begin March 11th, with registration currently open to members of Allies in Caring. Participants will come as they are, with materials and facilitation offered in both English and Spanish. The final work presented will be created with and by participants and facilitators, with a focus on identifying unifying themes that arise within their time together.
"This collaboration will allow our community members to learn and use the tools of the theater to share their unique stories and perspectives and express themselves in creative and meaningful ways. Theater can help us make the invisible more visible, as spectators it can help us see social blind spots and hopefully discover new ways to respond to our biggest challenges. For the actors in training, storytelling can help us connect with others with similar experiences and remind us of our strength and resilience. Moreover, storytelling can be a powerful way to promote understanding and acceptance of mental health issues and help create a more supportive and compassionate world. This new program will help us foster a strong sense of community in Hammonton, NJ, embracing theater as a community connector, " says Allies in Caring Executive Director Ivette Guillermo-McGahee.

El programa se presenta como parte del Festival Stages 2023 de New Jersey Theatre Alliance.
En el transcurso de tres talleres, miembros de la comunidad de Hammonton aprenderán y usarán las herramientas del teatro para explorar su expresión corporal, vocal y artística y para generar confianza, amistades y un conocimiento más profundo de sí mismos. Los participantes se adentrarán en el mundo del teatro aprendiendo improvisación, juegos y técnicas teatrales básicas. A lo largo de los talleres, se alentara a los participantes a compartir sus propias historias y perspectivas únicas y trabajar en colaboración para crear una breve pieza de actuación. El programa culminará con un evento público GRATUITO a las 2 p.m. del sábado 25 de marzo en el Eagle Theatre en el cual se hablará sobre el tiempo y trabajo conjunto de los participantes. Es Nuestra Historia reconoce el teatro como un conector comunitario que nos ayuda relacionarnos con nuestros vecinos y a desarrollar y a aumentar la empatía en Hammonton.
